Healthy Substitutions for Unhealthy Salads

Healthy-Salad

The best way to offset over-consumption of unhealthy calories is enjoying a huge salad at the start of every meal - salads are superfoods packed with nutrition, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and fiber.
Yet, not all salads are created equal. Because it’s called a salad doesn’t mean it’s necessarily healthy. People’s definitions of salads have greatly expanded to now include all kinds. Some less healthful salad ingredients may be a little subtler and trickier to spot. At a salad bar, you can easily make these swaps, and when eating at a restaurant, you can ask the waiter to make these modifications to accommodate you.

Unhealthy Add-Ins

While most salads start out with fresh vegetables or fruit, they can quickly get out of control with some of these unhealthy add ins.

1. Croutons

Croutons are a processed food. They are usually made from white bread, which contains gluten, as well as refined oils. Many also contain artificial colors and flavors, as well as salt, high-fructose corn syrup, and dairy products.
Try this instead: Looking for some nice crunch in your salad? Try a few tablespoons of chopped raw walnuts or almonds, or crumple some gluten-free crackers or kale chips over your salad.

2. Mayonnaise

Commercial mayonnaise contains eggs, oil (often soybean, a polyunsaturated vegetable oil), salt, vinegar, artificial flavors, and usually some type of sweetener such as high-fructose corn-syrup. According to the Center for Food Safety, 91 percent of the soybeans in the United States are genetically modified. Genetically modified crops may pose real threats to human health. Mayo is pure, gloppy fat that makes your body look the same. Not what we want!
Salads such as coleslaw and potato salad often use mayonnaise as a dressing, and many other salad dressings (ranch, bleu cheese, thousand island) are mayonnaise-based.
Try this instead: Use a little extra virgin olive, some raw apple cider vinegar, and chopped fresh herbs to top your salad. If you’re looking for a creamy salad topping, try using avocado, lemon juice, water, and herbs in the blender or food processor, or make a simple raw tahini-lemon dressing. Or, horseradish will give it a kick!

3. Cheese

Cheese is high in saturated fat, salt, and calories. Most cheese is made from cow's milk. One of the main problems with cow’s milk is the main protein found in dairy: casein. In The China Study, researcher T. Coli Campbell Ph.D. found that controlling casein intake by significantly reducing or eliminating it helped prevent cancer.  Casein is also notoriously difficult for humans to digest, and many people have sensitivities to the sugars in milk and cheese.
Try this instead: If you’re making the transition away from dairy, you may try swapping the cow’s milk products with a small amount (just an ounce) of goat cheese. You can also get a great cheesy flavor from sprinkling a little nutritional yeast on your salad, with the added bonus of pumping up your vitamin B12 intake.

4. Meat – bacon, ham, etc.

Meat adds fat and calories to salads. Likewise, processed meats like bacon and ham meats add chemicals, sugar, and salt. Adding bacon bits to a salad is one of the quickest ways to make that salad unhealthy. And the meat adds a heaviness to an otherwise light meal.
Try this instead:  If you’d like a salty, umami flavor you get from bacon, try adding sautéed shiitake mushrooms to your salad instead, or sprinkle it with dulse flakes. If you want your salad to be bulkier, try adding seeds or a nut pate to it. You can even ask the waiter if they can top your salad with a veggie burger- no bun needed.

5. Cool Whip – Whipped Cream (fruit salads)

Cool Whip is a highly processed artificial food made from ingredients such as hydrogenated oil, high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, and other chemicals. Whipped cream is made from cow’s milk dairy (see discussion above). Neither are healthy and both have plenty of saturated fat and calories, turning a fruit salad into a high-fat nightmare.
Try this instead: Squeeze a little lemon on your fruit. If you really want something creamy, make whipped cream from full-fat coconut milk. Here’s how:
Coconut Milk Whipped Cream
  • Place full-fat, unsweetened coconut milk in the refrigerator overnight.
  •  Drain off the liquid.
  • Scoop the coconut cream solids into a chilled bowl.
  • Using a chilled whisk or egg beater, whip until the coconut cream is light and fluffy.

Is your brand on the list? Perhaps reconsider which lipstick to wear or how frequently you wear it.

Surviving the Festive Season

My tips for surviving the Festive Season (and any time when celebrating):
  1. The simplest is to drink 16oz of water with a 1/3rd teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda                                      just before and 30mins after eating festive meals.
  2. The healthiest drink so that you always have a drink in your hand is Soda Water with                                    ice and lemon. It's fizzy, festive and it already has bicarbonate of soda in it.
  3. If you drink alcohol then alternate each alcoholic drink with the above Soda Water.
  4. Equally as bad as alcohol for the liver and kidneys are starchy carbs, high sugar foods                                and high sugar drinks. Serve and eat as many foods as possible with the least carbs.                         Prepare carb free nibbles and canapés, all planned to be super tasty.
  5. Desserts and cakes can be easy to make super healthy by opting to use ground almond flour,            coconut flour, cacao (coco) nuts and dried fruits. Google, “Paleo recipes”, on the web and see                how easy it is to make delicious alternatives. Practice now so you are prepared for the big meals.
  6. The challenge is that any cooked un-natural foods will cause some strain on your system and not           just in the Festive Season. I often get asked for my suggestions on any supplements that can             support digestive health, so here they are: Omega 3 Complete EFA, B-Complex when in need of           extra energy, NOWs Elderberry & Zinc when feeling a hint of a cold
Remember, a healthier digestive tract = a healthier body.......

Beat the Holiday Bloat

The holiday season is upon us, and for many, that means late nights filled with holiday parties, and of course, food! It’s easy to stray from your usually healthy diet come the holiday season, and this can leave you feeling bloated and sluggish. Here are some simple tips and recipes that will help you beat the bloat this holiday season.

What not to eat:

1. Excessive amounts of liquids while eating.  When you think of bloating it’s easy to just focus on foods. But what and how you’re drinking can have a big impact as well. Don’t consume large amounts of water and liquids when you are eating. They will impede the digestive process by diluting gastric juices, such as your hydrochlorlic acid. You'll also dilute the digestive enzymes your body needs for the effective digestion of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.
You will definitely feel bloated! So just sip on water and other liquids at meals, but no chugging. Hydrate between meals - at least 30 minutes before, and wait at least 45 minutes after eating to start drinking large amounts of liquids.
2. Avoid soda. You are going to be eating some favorite treats over the holidays- it's okay to induldge in these occasionally- but you don’t need to top it all off with soda. Soda is one of the worst culprits of bloating. Not only does it create an acidic metabolic state in your body, but it’s loaded with chemicals and contains HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) or artificial sweeteners (diet soda). Both have been shown to cause weight problems.
Carbonated soft drinks have air bubbles that travel to the stomach and release carbon dioxide within the digestive tract, creating an uncomfortable bloating sensation. On top of all that, excessive caffeine can cause belly bloat.
3. Hard to Digest Foods. Anything that is hard to digest will leave you feeling bloated, plain and simple. Dairy is known to particularly cause bloating, since it lacks all its enzymes and is one of the hardest foods most people can digest. So cut back or avoid it all together.
4. Strictly monitor your salt intake. Avoid all table salt, and avoid processed foods that contain table salt. Table salt is really de-natured sodium chloride salt. Table salt is dead, kiln-dried, highly processed, and will also create “false fat”, making you look bloated and up to 9 pounds heavier than you truly weigh. Throw out your saltshakers, and avoid processed foods that contain it. Small amounts of high quality sea salt can be used in strict moderation, when a salty flavor is desired. I’ve been using a lot of herbs, as well as cayenne and black pepper lately - really satisfying!

What to eat:

1.  Cranberry. Cranberry juice can also act as a debloating agent. Cranberry acts as a natural diuretic by flushing excessive fluids out of your body. Since you may inadvertently consume more sodium than usual during the holiday season, keep concentrated cranberry on hand (not sugar-filled Cranberry Cocktail!) and pour into a glass fresh water with some stevia to drink in the evenings.
2. A Good-for-you Refreshing Drink. Just because you’re avoiding soda, it doesn’t mean that you can’t add something equally refreshing to your day, that won’t leave you feeling bloated. Try some Rooibos Tea with fresh mint - it's high in antioxidants and flavonoids, which also helps to promote youthfulness and great skin. And mint is great for promoting better digestion.
3. Raw Apple Vinegar Cider. Add some raw apple cider vinegar to your diet. This will help promote optimal digestion and encourage the growth of healthy bacteria in the body. It’s extremely high in minerals and potassium, which promote cellular cleansing. It also has antiseptic qualities that can help cleanse your digestive tract and promote bowel movements to rid your body of waste! Since you only need 1 tablespoon a day to prevent bloating, it is easy to incorporate into your diet. Just replace other vinegars you currently use in your salad dressing with this.
Oh, and be sure to eat that fiber-filled big salad first, with raw apple cider vinegar in the dressing, which will help to naturally balance portion size of heavier foods that follow (one okay, two…alrighty, this time of year. But you don’t really need that third portion of  mashed potatoes do you?)
